Extreme Mammals

Found only in Thailand and Myanmar, the bumblebee bat is no bigger than a bumblebee and weighs only about as much as a dime.

This is just one of the unusual animals featured at Extreme Mammals, where you can meet some of your more bizarre relatives.

How about you. Are you extreme?

Well, yes and no. On the normal side, we are warm-blooded, have hair, nurse our young and have three middle ear bones. Like ancestral mammals, we have sharp front teeth and grinding back teeth.

On the extreme side, our brains are remarkably big for our body size. Our thumbs can close against our fingers with both strength and delicacy. Our tail is just a remnant of a few hidden bones, and our body hair is very sparse.

How about walking around on two legs? What might seem to humans like the most normal thing in the world is actually one of our most unusual features. The only other mammals that travel primarily on two legs all hop like kangaroos. Walking human-style is rarer in mammals than laying eggs!

Want to sleep on your dead pet?

What could be more comforting than the memories of your late pet laid to rest beneath your sleeping head? If a cherished pet's death leaves you sleepless and missing that warm, furry embrace, then Patricia Moore of Naples, Fla., may have the answer: pillows stuffed with your pet's ashes.

Moore started Soft-Hearted Products after she lost her own dog, Samantha. Samantha was cremated and her ashes were returned to her owner in an urn that felt cold and impersonal.

"She was always with me," Moore said. "On my lap, on my bed, next to me. I missed that so much."

A mother and daughter are in the middle of a custody battle in Galveston County over a two-year-old Chihuahua. Both say the dog should belong to them.

The daughter says, "Me and my mother went out one day and got really intoxicated and we wrote up a contract for the dog that I would sell her the dog."

The mother tells a different story.

Lots of Rats!

After disposing of 39,650 rodents, a man from Bangladesh has been crowned a rat-killing champion and has been awarded a 14-inch Sony color television for his efforts.

It took Binoy Kumar Karmakara one year to perform the daunting task and he used traps, poison and flooding to capture the animals.

He also kept their tails so that he could keep count.

Killing rats is a strategy that was launched by the government of Bangladesh because rats are responsible for the loss of about 10% of the country’s crops.

Rats!

"I know not everybody likes mice and rats but they can be beautiful. I think the headdress is really cute," explained French designer Charlie Le Mindu, 22, who unveiled this creation during London Fashion Week.

Le Mindu’s mice and rat carcass headdress features real rodent bodies.

<------ Oh, and check out the perfect outfit to wear this creation with.

Would you wear this to the grocery store?

To church on Sunday?

How about open house at school?

So - tell me - where would YOU wear this outfit to?

'Ugly' Bald Cat is a Star at NH Vet Clinic

A cat named Ugly Bat Boy is attracting a lot of attention at an Exeter vet clinic, where clients say they can't take their eyes off his striking appearance. He's bald in most places except for flowing fur on his chest, and he spends his days on a warm computer at Exeter Veterinary Hospital.

The office staff was getting so many questions about the cat that they put up a couple of fliers saying he's about 8 years old and perfectly normal in every way -- just ugly.

He has the run of the place and all the attention he can handle.

Now here's a real "wildlife" photographer

What would you do if you saw a wild otter holding a video camera?
Take a picture, of course!

Professional photographer Enrique Aguirre took this photo of an otter holding a video camera while on a tour of Elkhorn Slough aboard the Elkhorn Slough Safari Boat out of Moss Landing on Feb. 3. The otter apparently found the camera at the bottom of the ocean.

Do you think the otter will post on YouTube soon?
