Shahid’s Dhan Te Nan moment

Vishal Bhardwaj’s brilliant composition Dhan Te Nan has taken the nation by storm. The lead actor of Kaminey, Shahid Kapur on whom the song is picturised, tells us about the time he first heard the song.

“Vishal looks very shareef, but actually his looks are deceptive. After all he has written Kaminey; the screenplay and dialogues. Fortunately, he has only given the dancing category to someone else otherwise he would have got all the credits,” laughs Shahid.

Talking about the phenomenal song, he says, “One day Vishal called me to the studio. He has a very quiet manner. He asked me to sit, make myself at home and offered me tea and coffee. Then he requested me to listen to the new song he had composed and give my opinion on it,” recalls the actor. He continues, “So I took the headphones, the song started playing Dhan Te Nan and I almost fell of my chair. I couldn’t believe the same guy had made such a powerful song. I really loved it when I heard it.”

Jab We Met had Mauja Mauja and Nagada Nagada, Kismat Konnection had Aai Paapi and now Kaminey has Dhan Te Nan. All the songs have been super hits and make for great dance tracks. Shahid Kapur is one of the best, most fluid dancers in the industry.

So, what does dancing mean to him? “I think I started dancing because I loved it and enjoyed it. I was born in 1981 and Michael Jackson was huge at the time so I danced to his songs. Apart from that it has become a part of my job and it’s important for me to know the technical aspects. Essentially I enjoy dancing. I think dancing is a hugely creative art form and you can express so much through it,” concludes the adorable actor.

I don't mind being touted as biggest Kamina

Scriptwriter-director Amol Gupte, who plays a villain in Vishal Bharadwaj's forthcoming thriller "Kaminey", says he has no problems being touted as the biggest 'kamina' (rogue). On a more serious note, he says he discovered his mean side from failures in life just like his character in the movie. "Essentially 'Kaminey' is a kind of metaphor for meanness and it has its shades for the characters in the film. Even in the contest 'Sabse Bada Kamina Kaun' to promote the film, I am being touted as the biggest 'kamina' (rogue) and I don't mind that, " Gupte told in a telephonic interview from Mumbai. "I take it completely in my stride as I've tried to discover my mean side from massive amount of failures just like Bhopey, my character in the movie. The essence of the meanness quotient is what you'll find in my character. His emotions are on a gallop and he is a dangerous man. He has got multiple shades, " he said. Gupte came to the limelight for penning the critically acclaimed 2008 movie "Taare Zameen Par". Initially, Gupte was directing the film, but Aamir Khan later took over the reins and debuted as a director with the movie about a dyslexic child. Asked if he had to undergo any research for his screen comeback, he said: "Thirty years of cinema study has got me a good experience and that is exactly the form of R&D that has gone from my side into the film." Also starring Shahid Kapoor in a double role along with Priyanka Chopra, "Kaminey" releases Aug 14. In the crime thriller, Gupte will be seen as Priyanka's elder brother who is a small-time gangster and later turns into a rogue politician. Being a director himself, Gupte revealed he had no problems following Bharadwaj's instructions. "You have to see what position you are taking while you are on the sets of a movie. If I'm on the sets as a director, I'd like my actors to be fully committed to the project... I gave the same position to Vishal. I exploited myself as an actor and he did so in direction, " said Gupte. The writer-director was also all praise for Shahid and Priyanka. "They are extremely dedicated and have no ego issues with anyone. I never saw them disappearing to their vanity vans after a shot, unlike other actors... that shows their commitment, " he said. " 'Kaminey' is a caper which is galloping on the first gear at a 100-km- per-hour speed. Come and have fun, it's full of energy, " he added. Gupte's brush with acting is not new. Not many know that he has acted in National Award-winning film "Chakar Chandu Ka Chameli Wala" (1982), Ketan Mehta's "Holi" (1984) and Dayal Nihalani's "Guru Dakshina" (1986) apart from starring in numerous student films for the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). "As a student of cinema I've kept facing the camera till 1993. I used to work at Rs.30 per day. I spent most of my time in FTII either watching world cinema or in the canteen or under the wisdom tree, where I sat for 12 years, " he said. Gupte also hosted a talk show for Sony called "Bindaas Bol" in the 1990s. He is a man of many talents -- apart from acting and writing, he is also a painter and musician. Asked if he would continue with acting, he joked: "I'm not here to promote myself as an actor but ya...if (Quentin) Tarantino comes down..." Gupte is now set to wield the megaphone for "Sapno Ko Ginte Ginte" - a children's film written by him.

Here is the latest on Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor.

The two actors don’t talk to each other. However Shahid is a gentleman. He will not kiss-and-tell. So he never utters anything against his ex-lady love. As for Kareena, she too is not interested in commenting on her ex or any of his current flames.

So that chapter ends there. Incidentally, Shahid will be performing at a function overseas next week, and his PR person tells us that the awesome dancer will do Dhan Taanaa from Kaminey solo. He doesn’t have Kaminey co-star Priyanka Chopra for company. Whether PC will be in the audience to cheer him or with him in the green room, boosting his morale is a suspense that will later be revealed. Kareena was also asked to be present at the same show, but our lady says she will be in London shooting for a hair commercial. Will Saif Ali Khan be with her? Most probably he will...

Shahid-Priyanka's pyaar impossible

Ever since Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra got into a romantic relationship, there have been more stories about their split, than their togetherness.

The main problem has been their conflicting personalities. Priyanka loves her independence, working hard and playing harder while Shahid is possessive and leads a disciplined life.

Now, once again we are hearing about trouble between them and Priyanka getting tired of being constantly told what to do and what not by Shahid.

Priyanka is in Bangkok for the shooting of “Pyaar Impossible” and there have been constant reports of how she’s partying and having wild fun.

Though Shahid has not accompanied her, he is said to be keeping a tab on her by calling her constantly. Priyanka has reportedly even avoided his calls by saying she is busy. However, when Shahid continued calling her, she is said to have turned on the speaker of her mobile phone, letting everyone listen to Shahid’s talks.

This understandably embarrassed Shahid and he is said to have backed off, at least for the time being.

Shahid Kapur finds new interest

Actor Shahid Kapur, who had taken a fancy to bikes and splurged Rs.1.5 million on one, has now found a new interest. He has been attracted to photography.

Shahid has purchased a new expensive camera, the D50 from Cannon.

"Cameras are not allowed on sets usually. But, lately Ken Ghosh and Ahmad Khan get blinded by flashes on the sets of one of Shahid's ventures, only to realise that it was none other than the actor taking candid shots without their knowledge, much to the unit's amusement," said a source.

Apart from Ghosh's untitled film, the actor is also busy shooting for Vishal Bharadwaj's "Kaminey" with Priyanka Chopra.
