Industry men react to Neetu Chandra's hot 'girl on girl' photo shoot

Neetu Chandra's 'woman-on-woman' photo shoot has literally created a storm. Leave aside the protests (or the lack of them), the fact remains that the pictures have been one and all (though quite a few also deny having looked at them, but more on that later) and the Garam Masala girl who got 'lucky' with an unlucky number '13' quite recently has now moved up from a 'Traffic Signal' to Page 1 across National Dailies as well as prime slots on news channels. Joginder Tuteja catches up with quite a few industry men and tries to gauge their reaction on Neetu's photo shoot. While doing so, we came across an interesting trend. While majority of top line actors (names withheld) either refrained from commenting at all or evaded the query by stating - 'I am yet to look at the pictures', quite a few Bollywood filmmakers were game to share their views around the photo shoot. This is what they had to say: Suparn Verma - "More woman power! She looks fabulous and the pictures are aesthetically done. I think the moral police should take a nap!" Ken Ghosh - "It's quite an interesting concept! Great going!" Rohit Jugraj - "I think it's very awesome and gutsy on Neetu's part to go ahead with such bold and sensuous pictures. Times are changing and we should pay heed. They say cinema is a reflection of the changing society and if the world can have a festival like Moondance (a gay and dance film festival), we can at least celebrate freedom of expression in cinema. I have always had a script about two women, a pack of cigarettes and a road trip in mind, though that script of mine is not about lesbian characters but does have an intimate moment between the girls. Photo shoots like Neetu's only prove to me that audience is ready, howsoever niche it may be. But the question is - 'Are we filmmakers ready to handle such themes deftly with maturity and sensitively?" Randeep Hooda - "Neetu's pictures are very hot. It's in some form or the other every man's fantasy. It's about time we started opening up about it (smiles). It's a brave shoot so cheers to her!" Jag Mundhra - "I just checked one such picture on the net. I think it is quite beautiful and provocative. Her body language is defiant; celebrating raw female sexuality. It says - 'As an artist I am ready to push the boundaries'. It defies the viewer to do the same. I think it is very symbolic than sexy, just like the PETA ads." Rahul Dholakia - "I saw the shoot, and while I thought it was an interesting concept and a good marketing tool, I don't think we should give it any more importance than that. If this picture is generating any kind of controversy, I don't think it should. It's bold but not obscene; it's about two women, maybe lesbians. So what?" Piyush Jha - "Everyday I get surprised at how much further and further we are pushing the envelope of morality in India. While I am not aesthetically riveted by the pictures, I am impressed by the challenge it throws at the so called 'norms' of our society." Madhu Mantena - "I am in London and haven't seen the pictures yet. However, would like to meet them together!" Vivek Agnihotri - "We are living in time of media clutter and to get mind share, media must titillate; so a shoot like this is nothing novel. Also competition is so tough in our industry that lots of people are willing to go to any extent to be noticed. What can be a better way than shock the audiences? The picture meets both these aspirations. Neetu is talented and I am sure she is capable of shocking more with her talent and soon she will realize it." Shirish Kunder - "Awesome. In fact I thought it was a little restrained. They should have gone out a little more." Navdeep Singh - "Girl-girl action is always very welcome. These pictures seemed tasteful enough. There is a need and space for some eroticism in our lives. And when it's girl-on-girl, it's even better!!!" Robby Grewal - "Neetu has liked doing the shoot and I have liked looking at the pictures. So where does the question of protests or morality come into picture? At the end of the day when an artist and a consumer are comfortable with something, there should not be a problem with everyone else. And come on, it's not the first time that such pictures have come on print, so why are we making a hue and cry?"

Getting intimate with a girl doesn't mean I'm a Lesbian: Neetu Chnadra

Denying rumours that she got carried away while shooting a provocative male fantasy photo shoot for the cover of a men’s magazine, actress Neetu Chandra (of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!) has stated, “I very much knew what I was doing and never got carried away. But if there is even an iota of doubt in anyone’s mind, let me make it clear once and for all that I am not a lesbo.” It can be recalled that Neetu was shooting for the cover of ‘The Man’ magazine with a model outside the lobby of a 3- star hotel last week, when a group of regular male customers started shouting “Jai Maharashtra” slogans and threatened action from Raj Thackeray’s Maharashrtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). They even tried to confiscate the camera, resulting in the shoot having to be abruptly called off. Neetu had termed them as “some frustrated men, who just wanted my attention. When they didn’t get it, they started making a scene about the shoot and threatening us.” Now there has been talk about some activists planning to burn copies of the said magazine when its issue carrying Neetu’s images releases next week, alleging that the images have lesbian connotations. But Neetu flatly denies the charge. “It’s about two girls getting intimate to arouse male interest. And that doesn’t mean it’s about lesbianism,” she reiterates. She says the shoot has been done so aesthetically that several Bollywood biggies have complimented her after the pictures made its way into television channels and papers even before the magazine hit the stands. “I am getting so many congratulatory phone calls, SMS’s and emails,” says Neetu and adds that even her family members in the conservative city of Patna, instead of being embarrassed, have praised the pictures.

After facing the wrath of political affiliates while doing a bold and scandalous bikini photo shoot for a men’s magazine, actress Neetu Chandra has now developed cold feet. Recently, while the actress was shooting for The Man magazine at a 3-star hotel with model Krishikka Gupta, a group of regular male customers started shouting “Jai Maharashtra’ slogans and threatened action from Raj Thackeray’s Maharashrtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). They even tried to confiscate the camera, resulting in the shoot having to be abruptly called off. After talking about the incident, the actress has suddenly developed cold feet. In an attempt to backtrack and do a volte-face, Neetu has now stated on her Facebook account, “nothing like that ever happened”. Earlier, Neetu was quoted by Mid-Day, saying, “The hotel management didn’t tell us to leave because of complaints from other guests but it was a mob of over 80 people that disrupted the shoot… They were being a nuisance and that’s why we halted the shoot.” In The Asian Age today, she has given contradictory quotes feigning ignorance. “I didn’t know anything about this controversy… It was shocking… Neither our bodies were touching, nor are we kissing… I am a Bihari and this can cause a lot of trouble.” But publicist Dale Bhagwagar who broke the news, has stuck to the report. “It’s strange that Neetu is trying to take the media for a ride now, denying the whole incident. A lot of people were witness to it. Above all, I have Neetu on record talking much more about the incident and indecent attitude of the group that created the ruckus and brought the shoot to a halt, ” said the publicist. In Neetu’s words (recorded) to the publicist, she has stated, that “the shoot was about how men find sensual female bodies very attractive. It was aesthetically done but the public did not let the shoot happen and we had to cancel it. The members of this group were chauvinist attention seekers. We are part of a hypocrite society and these were frustrated old men. When females are around in bikini and swimwear, they (such men) always want attention… ke humein bhi dekho. But who wants to see them?”

What's Neetu Chandra doing in Apartment with Tanushree

Two months back, Neetu Chandra was at pains to explain to all and sundry that her 13B wasn't a horror film but instead a supernatural thriller. Now she is forced to take the same route of denial even as the shoot of her latest film Apartment is making brisk progress. "I don't know why some out there are hell bent on placing me in a horror film. I have nothing against the horror genre and who knows, I may work in one as well in near future. But just like 13B wasn't a horror film, as everyone saw it for themselves, even Apartment doesn't have any inclusion of horror element. Guess people have started associating horror with every film that is set within the confines of four walls in a skyscraper apartment." She insists that while 13B still had supernatural element attached to it, if not the horror, Apartment is a plain and simple dramatic thriller. "Jag sir (as Jagmohan Mundhra, the film's director, is popularly called) is really shaping up Apartment quite beautifully. It is an edge of the seat thriller and I am enjoying every day of the shooting. This is one of those films where I feel like coming in every day the moment I wake up. In fact I get depressed when there is an off day since I am myself so inclined to see which scene is going to be shot next." Interestingly, Apartment is the same film which was earlier titled Roommates and was supposed to star Gul Panag and Raima Sen along with Pakistani actor Mikaal Zulfiqar of Mundhra's own Shoot On Sight fame. However, the cast as well as the film's title went through a complete change and Apartment stars Rohit Roy and Anupam Kher along with Neetu Chandra and Tanushree Dutta. Though Neetu is not willing to talk much about her character in the film, she hints on being prodded further, "Apartment tells the story of this girl (played by me) who comes from a small town to this big city. She sees quite a lot of changes around her which start reflecting in her personality. Soon, she becomes quite possessive about things and obsession takes over. Now what is she so obsessed about is something for which you would have to wait. It is too early to talk about it." In the film, Neetu's character is shown to be sharing an apartment with Tanushree Dutta. Now whom does she get obsessed with? Is it the apartment, Tanushree, someone else or herself? Well, time should tell!

Q: What is your definition of fashion? A: I think fashion is all about being comfortable, wearing clothes that suits your body. Fashion is about how you carry yourself. One should not follow style blindly. Q: Where do you mostly shop from? A: I have my designers who take care of that. Anita Dongre, Rajesh and Anirban are the people behind my style. They know exactly what I am comfortable wearing and what suits my body. They are classy and different from the rest. Q: Do you prefer any specific brands? A: Yes, I am an absolute brand baby and prefer different brands for different outfits. Q: Your gym wear is... A: T-shirts, tracks and Reebok shoes. Infact, the tracks and t-shirts I use while working out are also Reebok. At times, people have actually asked me if I am endorsing Reebok. Q. Do you go for the formal look at times? A: I don't like wearing formals much. I wear them only when needed. When I do, I prefer Zara, Chanel and Christian Dior. Q: What's your casual look? A: A nice fitting pair of blue jeans and a plain T-shirt. I don't like stripes. For me, jeans have to be Levis and I prefer Forever 21. Q: What do you prefer for evening wear? A: My casual look doubles as my evening wear. Q: What about night wear? A: I wear loose outfits at night. They are more comfortable. Satin pajamas, loose T- shirts and spaghettis. I even wear shorts. Q: Do you adorn yourself with accessories? A: I am not much of a necklace girl. I do wear small earrings, bracelets and neck-pieces as long as it goes with my dress. Q: Which brand do you favour for footwear? A: Chanel, Aldo, and many Indian brands. The same goes for my handbags. Q: What are the cosmetics that you use? A: My skin is sensitive so I mostly use Mac products. They are good. Even Loreal lip-glosses are good. I use Origin body lotions and Lan com make-up remover. Q: Which is the latest perfume that you bought? A: I don't remember, but my favourites are Happy by Clinique, Davidoff Cool Water and Issey Miyake's basic fragrance. Q: Brands you prefer for lingerie? A: Hmm, that's a secret and I don't want any one else to know about it. Q: What colours do you think are musts in any wardrobe? A: I am a colourful person. So I like mostly all colours, but black, lemon, white, pink, and beige are favourites.
